Story Construction was the design-builder for this 11,900 sq. ft. winery near Oskaloosa, Iowa. The structure is on two levels with the lower level concrete walls and slabs built into the hillside and an upper level pre-engineered metal building with a standing seam metal roof. The lower level houses the winery process which consists of a receiving dock, crushing and destemming area, tank room, bottling area, quality control lab for the wine maker, and a temperature controlled storage room. The receiving dock located at the rear of the winery is a covered exterior concrete slab. At this location you will find the “Crush Pad,” an area that houses the crusher and destemmer equipment, loading dock and chiller with associated piping. The tank room nests 29 tanks that vary in capacity from 500 to 2,500 gallons. The upper level, is ground accessible from the parking lot and is open to the public providing a wine tasting bar and gift shop. The “bridge area” provides the public a bird’s-eye view of the wine making process from start to finish. While glass walls separate the fermentation tanks from the public to protect the process from contamination, there are some open-air areas that allow the public to experience the smells, as well as the sights of the wine-making process.
