Project Receives LEED Gold Building Certification

Story Construction Co. has received word that the Marshalltown Public Library has been LEED® Gold certified by the U. S. Green Building Council (USGBC). LEED is the nation’s pre-eminent program for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. Story Construction was the construction manager for the new 35,700 sq. ft. library. The Marshalltown Library is the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certified public library in the state of Iowa and is one of only 13 public libraries in the U.S. to achieve LEED Gold certification. Designed by FEH Associates, Inc., Des Moines, the facility includes public meeting room space, a café area, dedicated children’s collection and program space, adult collection space, reference/genealogy areas, dedicated study rooms, public service desk and administrative/work areas for the library staff and volunteers. The project achieved LEED certification for energy use, lighting, water and material use as well as incorporating a variety of other sustainable strategies. By using less energy and water, a LEED certified building saves money for families, businesses and taxpayers; reduces greenhouse gas emissions; and contributes to a healthier environment for residents, workers and the larger community. Story developed a Construction Waste Management plan and ensured that all recyclable items were sorted and diverted from landfills to construction and debris recycling centers. This involved having multiple containers on site--one each for construction debris, garbage and metals. Carrying out this plan resulted in diverting 95% of the waste from the landfill. Story also developed Indoor Air Quality Management Plans—one implemented during the construction phase and one carried out before occupancy. The guidelines were monitored and enforced for these plans by working closely with the onsite contractors. Some of the strategies employed were wrapping all open ends of duct work with plastic prior to arrival onsite and during installation and also monitoring that all materials stored in the elements were kept dry prior to installation.
